NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, August 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF) presents the fourth offering of its 2026 Summer Virtual Film Series, African Diaspora: History and Cinema, streaming August 28 through September 6, 2026.

Bringing together ten award-winning films, the series explores the people, political movements, ideas, and cultural transformations that have shaped Africa and the African Diaspora. Through fiction and documentary, the program examines independence and African socialism, liberation struggles, resistance to dictatorship, Pan-African political thought, democratic movements, Black intellectual life, the African American military experience in France, the origins of Rastafari, international solidarity, and Afro-descendant historical memory.

Created to make exceptional cinema exploring the human experience of people of color accessible beyond the theater, the ADIFF Summer Virtual Film Series presents curated online programs organized around themes that matter. African Diaspora: History and Cinema invites audiences to approach history not simply as a collection of dates and events, but through the lives, choices, conflicts, and ideas of people who experienced and shaped moments of profound change.

From struggles against colonialism and dictatorship to movements for democracy and cultural liberation, the films reveal how political, social, and cultural transformations emerge—and how their consequences continue to resonate in the present.

African Diaspora: History and Cinema Lineup:
• Dancing the Twist in Bamako (Mali) — A film set against the transformative period of independence and African socialism.
• Nome (Guinea-Bissau) — A story rooted in the liberation war and the struggle to end colonial domination.
• Marighella (Brazil) — A powerful exploration of resistance to dictatorship.
• Walter Rodney: What They Don’t Want You to Know (Guyana) — A film examining the life, ideas, and legacy of one of the major figures of Pan-African political thought.
• Kinshasa Makambo (Democratic Republic of the Congo) — A compelling portrait of a democratic movement and the people confronting political power in the streets of Kinshasa.
• Paris Noir: African-Americans in the City of Light (France/USA) — An exploration of Black intellectual history and the African and African-descendant thinkers, artists, and activists whose presence helped transform cultural and political life in Paris.
• Fighting for Respect: African-Americans in WWI (France/USA) — A look at African American military history in France and the struggle for dignity and recognition.
• The First Rasta (Jamaica) — An exploration of the origins of Rastafari and the history behind a movement that would have a profound international cultural impact.
• The Mali Cuba Connection (Mali/Cuba) — A story of international solidarity and the political and cultural connections created across continents.
• The Esmeraldas Beach (Ecuador) — A reflection on historical memory and Afro-descendant identity.

Together, these films engage with historical turning points—moments when individuals and communities confronted existing structures and political, social, or cultural change reshaped societies.

“Cinema allows us to encounter history through the experiences of the people who lived it,” says Dr. Reinaldo B. Spech, Co-Founder & Co-Director of ADIFF. “These films show that history is not abstract: it is made through ideas, struggles, choices, resistance, creativity, and the actions of individuals and communities. African Diaspora: History and Cinema gives audiences an opportunity to discover important historical moments while also reflecting on how those histories continue to shape the world we live in today.”
